Is this DIY double cheeseburger the ultimate fakeaway?
Fixing for a takeaway and only the drive-thru will do? Well stop right there, this DIY double cheeseburger will take your fakeaway game from zero to one hundred in 40 minutes flat – gherkins or not.
It turns out that recreating the flavours of the world’s most iconic cheeseburger is deliciously easy. First, you’ll need two juicy beef patties simply seasoned with salt and pepper. Then, you’ll need your cheese. Whether you go American-style for the ultimate ooze or keep it British with a sharp cheddar is up to you. Finally, you’ll need a creamy burger sauce so packed with flavour that even Ronald will come running for the recipe.

Time 40 minutes
- 2 sesame seed buns
- 400g minced beef
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
- 4 slices of cheese
- ¼ iceberg lettuce (finely shredded)
- 2 gherkins (sliced)
- ½ white onion (finely diced)
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 2 tsp yellow Mustard
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp pickle juice
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
Step 1 Generously season your beef mince with salt and pepper in a bowl and mix until sticky to the touch. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions, shape them into patties, and pop them into the fridge on a parchment-lined tray.
Step 2 Whip up your burger sauce by combining all your ingredients in a bowl and giving it a good mix.
Step 3 Slice the burger buns into 3 and toast them in a dry frying pan until golden brown.
Step 4 Heat a frying pan on medium heat with a splash of vegetable oil and fry your patties for 5-7 minutes. Top tip: use a spatula or burger weight to keep your patties flat while cooking.
Step 5 Add a slice of cheese to each patty and turn off the heat when the cheese starts to melt.
Step 6 Build your Gousto Burgers with shredded lettuce, a cheesy patty and a layer of sliced gherkin, diced onions and burger sauce. Pop in the middle of your burger bun and repeat.
