If you haven’t tried eggnog before, don’t be put off by the name. It’s rich and creamy, potentially boozy and wonderfully festive. Yes, it contains some egg, but it’s nothing to be scared of – it’s certainly tastes nothing like drinking raw eggs!
Eggnog has had an interesting history – it’s been around for at least 250 years, with different versions being enjoyed in the USA and Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Trinidad and Europe, usually differing based on what spirit is most popular or readily available. Give the recipe below a go to master a reliable homemade eggnog, but don’t be afraid to mix it up a little to create your own eggnog recipe based around your own tastes!
- 200ml bourbon (or a spirit of your choosing!)
- 4 eggs
- 240ml milk
- 240ml cream
- 120ml white sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1. Combine the milk, cream, vanilla extract, nutmeg and cinnamon in a saucepan and place over a low heat until the bubbles begin to form around the edges of the mixture. Meanwhile, separate the egg whites and yolks into two bowls
Tip: The easiest way to do this is crack the shell of an egg on its side, then over a bowl transfer the yolk from one half of the shell to the other until all the white has dropped into the bowl below
2. Add the sugar to the egg yolks and whisk until fluffy and separately whisk the egg whites until fluffy. Slowly add the sugar and yolk mix to the whites, and stir gently until fully combined
3. Remove the milky mix from the heat once bubbles have started to appear, and slowly add this to the sugar and egg mix, stirring as you add it until fully combined
4. Pour in the bourbon and give the mixture a final stir, then cover tightly with cling film and place in the fridge for a couple of hours
5. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg a cinnamon stick
