Some people will swear by adding cloves into the mix, to give it that festive feeling, others will stick to different spices like nutmeg or allspice, or will throw every <span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/food-for-thought\/christmas-flavour-combinations-table\">Christmassy ingredient<\/a><\/strong><\/span> they can find in there and hope for the best!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mulled wine needs two things: sugar and spice. Our recipe brings it right back to the basics of how to make mulled wine, then adds one big twist. We&#8217;ve used honey for the sugar, but in place of the more traditional festive spices we&#8217;ve gone for some actual hot spice in the form of chillies!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One important thing to remember when making your mulled wine &#8211; don&#8217;t boil or heat it for too long! You&#8217;ll cook off all the alcohol and be left with tasty but boozeless mulled grape juice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trust us, chillies can help make some amazing spiced and spicy mulled wine &#8211; and if you&#8217;re a little wary or you&#8217;re not a big fan of spicy food (or drinks!) then just go easy and add less than we recommend. (We&#8217;ve also listed some optional ingredients below as alternatives if it&#8217;s not your thing and you&#8217;re not feeling too adventurous!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lx0cE7gO29w\" width=\"700\" height=\"390\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>You&#8217;ll Need (for 4 servings):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>1 bottle red <span class=\"il\">wine<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>4 tbsp honey<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>2 oranges<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>2 chillies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>a large, thumb-sized knob of ginger<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span>Optional Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>1 lemon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>8 cloves<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>2 cinnamon sticks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>2 star anise<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>1 tsp nutmeg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>1 tsp allspice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>mulled wine syrup<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>75ml brandy\u00a0<b>or\u00a0<\/b>250ml port<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span>Method:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><b>1. Slice<\/b>\u00a0the oranges into quarters, halve the chillies, peel the ginger (scrape the skin off with a teaspoon) and cut it into a few large pieces<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>2. Add<\/b>\u00a0the <span class=\"il\">wine<\/span>, honey, orange quarters, chilly halves,\u00a0ginger pieces and any optional spices in a large pot and stir to mix in the honey<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>3.<\/b> <b>Cover <\/b>with a lid and heat<b>\u00a0<\/b>gently<b>\u00a0<\/b>on the stove for 5 minutes or until hot<br \/>\nTip: The <span class=\"il\">mulled<\/span> <span class=\"il\">wine<\/span> will lose some of its alcohol content when heated, so add brandy or port once it&#8217;s been heated if you like your <span class=\"il\">mulled<\/span> <span class=\"il\">wine<\/span> nice and strong!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>4. Remove <\/b>from the heat and ladle into heatproof glasses<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>What spices do you use when you make mulled wine?
