Toffee apples are the perfect thing\u00a0to enjoying around the bonfire and they&#8217;re also lots of fun to make, especially if you have kids that want to get involved in the decorating after you&#8217;ve made the toffee!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve\u00a0kept our toffee apple recipe easy and traditional, apart from one cheeky twist, just for the grown ups: we&#8217;ve thrown a shot of rum into the toffee mixture to give you\u00a0a little extra warmth while you&#8217;re standing around the bonfire. Check out the video and full recipe below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2I-LjD2VnZo\" width=\"690\" height=\"390\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients (for 4 toffee\u00a0apples):<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 4 granny smith apples<br \/>\n\u2022 50 ml water<br \/>\n\u2022 200 g golden caster sugar<br \/>\n\u2022 1 tsp vinegar<br \/>\n\u2022 4 tbsp golden syrup<br \/>\n\u2022 50 ml spiced rum (optional)<br \/>\n\u2022 4 wooden skewers<br \/>\n\u2022 decorations (chopped nuts, coloured sprinkles, crushed biscuits)<br \/>\n\u2022 baking paper<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Toffee-Apples-7-of-11.jpg\" alt=\"how to make toffee apples\" width=\"2768\" height=\"1848\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Cover<\/strong> the apples in boiled water in a large bowl to remove waxy coating<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Remove<\/strong> the apples from the water straight away using a slotted spoon and pat dry<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Remove<\/strong> the stalks from apples<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Insert<\/strong> the skewers into the holes left by the stalks<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Heat<\/strong> 50 ml of water in a saucepan over a medium heat<\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>Add<\/strong> the sugar and stir until fully dissolved<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Add<\/strong> the vinegar and golden syrup (add a shot of spiced rum as well if you fancy it!), then boil until the liquid thickens and becomes toffee<br \/>\nTip: If you have a sugar thermometer, take the\u00a0toffee off the heat\u00a0when it reaches 140\u00b0C<br \/>\nTip: Test to find out when it is ready by dropping a little toffee mixture in a glass of cold water \u2013 if it sets into hard threads, it\u2019s ready!<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0<strong>Hold <\/strong>the skewer and dip\u00a0the apple carefully into the hot toffee to cover it<br \/>\nTip: Use a spoon to scoop the mixture over the apple if necessary<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Place<\/strong>\u00a0the toffee\u00a0apples a sheet of baking paper to cool and\u00a0partially set<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>Add<\/strong> your personal touch by rolling set toffee apples in chopped nuts, sprinkles, biscuits, or whatever you like!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Toffee-Apples-5-of-11-1.jpg\" alt=\"how to make toffee apples\" width=\"2562\" height=\"2562\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Let us know what you think of our toffee apple recipe in the comments, and take a look at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/recipes\/homemade-marshmallows-recipe\">Momma Mariaux&#8217;s Homemade Marshmallows<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0recipe for another perfect fireside treat!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Along with stews and comforting desserts like Sticky Toffee Pudding, Autumn is the time of year for toffee apples, the ultimate in seasonal treats that are &#8211; confusingly &#8211; both healthy and unhealthy in equal measure.
