\"\"There\u2019s still a lot to do in the race to protect our planet.<\/p>\n

Right now, the food industry is the second biggest contributor to climate change<\/a>, but also has many of the solutions we need to tackle it. That means it\u2019s our responsibility at Gousto to do what we can to improve things.<\/p>\n

The good news is our business model reduces food waste and emissions by its very nature.<\/b> And while there are plenty of challenges left to tackle, we’re at the beginning of a very exciting journey. Here\u2019s what we delivered in 2021 to work toward our goal of every meal leaving the world better off.<\/p>\n

Proud to be a B Corp. But wait, what\u2019s a B Corp?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Joining the B Corp community in August was definitely a highlight last year. If you\u2019re not sure what B Corp is, here\u2019s the lowdown<\/a>, but in short \u2013 it\u2019s a group of companies who believe in doing business responsibly and being a force for good.<\/p>\n

We couldn\u2019t be prouder. Becoming a B Corp doesn\u2019t just mean sustainable street cred \u2013 it confirms that we\u2019re focused on doing right by people and the planet. And with our fellow B Corps, we\u2019ll be making an even bigger impact than we could on our own.<\/p>\n

Slashing CO2: How much does Gousto reduce your carbon footprint?<\/b><\/h2>\n

*Klaxon sounds* In 2021 we cut our customers\u2019 carbon footprint by a whopping 69,000 tonnes.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In fact, if you\u2019re a customer, a weekly Gousto box reduces your carbon emissions by 23%<\/b><\/a> compared to the same shop from a supermarket. So the more boxes you order, the more emissions you take out of the system.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not sitting on our laurels, either. To reduce more of our emissions, we\u2019re finding more ways to source sustainably, adding more plant-based recipes and seasonal ingredients to our menus, replacing more packaging with recyclable alternatives, and making all our sites more energy efficient.<\/p>\n

Fighting food waste: Where do undelivered Gousto boxes go?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

In the UK, we throw away around 9.5 million tonnes of food a year. That\u2019s 15 billion meals \u2013 enough to feed the population 3 meals a day for 11 weeks!<\/p>\n

Our model cuts food waste by design, and we\u2019ve introduced a grading system to redistribute edible food to people in need with the help of our partner FareShare<\/b><\/a>. They turned them into 424,469 nutritious meals <\/b>last year, sent to 1,961 local charities<\/b> and communities. It prevented 285 tonnes of wasted carbon emissions<\/b> and 267 million litres of water<\/b>. Yowza.<\/p>\n

Anything left is fed to animals, composted or sent for anaerobic digestion.<\/p>\n

We have a policy around here: Zero waste to landfill<\/b><\/h2>\n

None of our food gets sent to landfill, ever. Nada. Niet. It\u2019s just not what we\u2019re about. But we couldn\u2019t do it without our waste providers, FirstMile<\/b><\/a> for London, and Veolia<\/b><\/a> for our fulfilment sites. They both operate a zero-to-landfill policy \u2013 right up our street.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Gousto doing about our packaging?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Tackling plastic is tricky when it comes to food. It\u2019s often crucial for keeping ingredients safe and fresh (spinach, we\u2019re looking at you). Despite this, 58% of the packaging across Gousto\u2019s own-brand ingredients<\/b> is now recyclable \u2013 and\u00a0now you can recycle a lot of our plastic film in larger supermarkets.<\/p>\n

Also in 2021, Gousto trialled the world\u2019s first edible stock sachet, Xampla<\/a>, made from pea protein.<\/p>\n

Rest assured, plastic is high on our priority list. We\u2019ve given ourselves until 2025 (in line with the UK Plastics Pact) to make all our own packaging 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable. It\u2019s a huge goal, but that\u2019s never stopped us before.<\/p>\n

Health and happiness: How Gousto\u2019s upping the cauliflower steaks<\/b><\/h2>\n

More plant-based and veg options<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s 2022 and you want options. Now one third of our weekly menu is vegetarian or plant-based. More choice, more veg, and this just in, there\u2019ll be even more where that came from very soon.<\/p>\n

Healthy, on your terms<\/b><\/p>\n

You might have seen two healthy ranges arrive on the menu last year, Calorie Controlled<\/i><\/b> and Lighter<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n

Vegging out<\/b><\/p>\n

Getting your reds, yellows and dark leafy greens really does amp up the vits and mins in your diet. Since last year, you\u2019ll find an average of 1.8 portions of veg per recipe<\/b>, and 66% of recipes<\/b> had at least 2 of your 5-a-day<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Fun fact: Overall in 2021, Gousto customers piled their plates with 148,235,667 portions of veg.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"Giving at Gousto<\/b><\/h2>\n

Last year we donated \u00a3150k to charities, including our staff\u2019s own contributions through Gousto\u2019s Payroll Giving & Matching Scheme. Donations supported those with mental health concerns and complex illnesses, people living in poverty or who are homeless and more.<\/p>\n

Cookstarter<\/b><\/p>\n

The pandemic was a challenging time, especially for the hospitality industry. We created the Cookstarter campaign<\/a> to help five local restos, chosen by the public, from the UK\u2019s diverse food scene.<\/p>\n

The five winning independent restaurants each whipped up a dish for the\u00a0 Gousto menu, received \u00a310,000 funding from us (plus your tips from TipJar) and a year of business coaching.<\/p>\n

Living the team. No wait, dream.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

In 2021, our team grew from 1,028 to 1,625 Goustonians, and we were nominated by the Otta Rocket List 2021<\/b><\/a> as one of the fastest-growing London companies to fast-track your career.<\/p>\n

Real Living Wage\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Everyone deserves fair pay. We\u2019re keeping ourselves accountable by joining the Living Wage Foundation<\/b><\/a> as a Living Wage Employer. We also like to give other companies a nudge to do the same.<\/p>\n

We know we\u2019ve got a long way to go, but we look forward to the challenges ahead, and can\u2019t wait to see where it takes us.<\/p>\n
