[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you\u2019ve never been to Katz\u2019s Deli<\/a> before, it\u2019s worth adding to your next gastro tour of New York \u2013 and not just because it\u2019s in When Harry Met Sally<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Known for their legendary sandwiches, sharp pickles, and staff that aren\u2019t afraid to tell you how it is, Katz\u2019s was also the setting for that <\/i>scene. You know the one.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m going to level with you, making real pastrami takes ages. Days, in fact. So I\u2019ve recreated the flavours using leftover roast beef, topped with yellow mustard, homemade pickles and plenty of pepper. It might not be 100% authentic, but it\u2019ll tide you over until you’re next in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

Katz\u2019s Deli-inspired \u2018Pastrami\u2019 Sandwich<\/h2>\n

Prep time: 10-15 mins<\/p>\n

Total time: 1 hour 15 mins (including pickling time)<\/p>\n

Serves 4<\/p>\n

For the sandwich<\/strong><\/p>\n

300g pastrami or leftover roast beef, thinly sliced<\/p>\n

8 slices of sourdough or rye bread<\/p>\n

4-8 tbsp American Mustard<\/p>\n

For the dill pickles<\/strong><\/p>\n

6 mini cucumbers, halved lengthwise or<\/i> 1 large cucumber, cut into large sticks.<\/p>\n

A small bunch of fresh dill, roughly chopped<\/p>\n

\u00bd tsp mustard seeds<\/p>\n

100ml cider vinegar<\/p>\n

\u00bd tsp black peppercorns<\/p>\n

1 garlic clove<\/p>\n

\u00bd tsp chilli flakes<\/p>\n

1 tsp sea salt<\/p>\n

2 tsp sugar<\/p>\n

Method<\/h2>\n

First make your dill pickles. Add all the ingredients except the cucumber, garlic and dill to a saucepan with 200 ml of water. Bring to a boil, stirring to help the sugar dissolve. Once boiling, turn off the heat. Meanwhile, prepare your cucumbers.<\/p>\n

Place the cucumbers into a clean jar or container along with the garlic and dill. Once the brine isn’t too hot, pour it over the cucumbers and seal the container. These will be ready to eat once cool, but leave them for 24 hours for the best flavour.<\/p>\n

Next, assemble the sandwich. To your slices of bread, spread a thick layer of mustard, then crack a thick layer of black pepper over the top (if you\u2019re using pastrami, don\u2019t add pepper). Pile high with your leftover roast beef. Add another squeeze of mustard then top with another slice of bread. Serve your pickles on the side.<\/p>\n
