{"id":15518,"date":"2021-02-04T12:38:16","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T12:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/?p=15518"},"modified":"2025-05-28T12:34:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T11:34:50","slug":"homemade-bao-buns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/homemade-bao-buns","title":{"rendered":"Fluffy Bao Buns In 5 Steps"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]With Chinese New Year around the corner, I&#8217;ve whipped up a five-step steamed bao recipe that anyone could make at home \u2013 with a little help from family-owned Taiwanese restaurant, <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/mrbaouk\"><strong>Mr. Bao.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve steamed perfectly pillowy baos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/bao-fillings\">check out my savoury &#8216;n&#8217; sweet fillings<\/a> to stuff them with (my personal favourite is the custardy apple ice cream).<\/p>\n<p>Are you ready to master the steamed bao? Here\u2019s what you&#8217;ll need.<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<p>7g fast-action yeast<\/p>\n<p>2 tbsp caster sugar<\/p>\n<p>340g plain flour<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd tsp baking powder<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd tsp bicarbonate of soda<\/p>\n<p>Bamboo steamer or bain-marie<\/p>\n<h2>Method<\/h2>\n<p>Step 1: Combine the yeast and sugar in a bowl with 150ml of warm water. Mix and set aside for 10-15 mins. Sift in the flour, baking powder, bicarb and a pinch of salt,\u00a0 then combine to form a dough ball.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Knead onto a floured surface for 5 minutes, until the dough is perfectly smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a towel and leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Bao tip:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;The more time you can give for the first prove, the more you&#8217;ll get back! Extra time will help you maximise the fluffiness of your bao buns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Place twelve 1-cm squares of baking paper on a large baking tray. Roll your dough until it\u2019s \u00bdcm thick and cut out twelve circles with a 7cm round cookie cutter.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Place each circle on a square of paper and brush with veg oil (so they don\u2019t stick when folded). Fold each one in half, cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm place for another hour to puff up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Bao tip: <\/strong>&#8220;When using a metal steamer, don&#8217;t forget to place the baking paper under the bao before steaming. This will help to stop sticking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Step 5: Once risen, steam in batches for 9-11 minutes until cooked through. Add your chosen filling and serve warm.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the first bao is chef&#8217;s treat.
