{"id":15098,"date":"2020-10-20T15:22:59","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T14:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/?p=15098"},"modified":"2021-10-21T14:10:55","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T13:10:55","slug":"chocolate-yule-log","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/chocolate-yule-log","title":{"rendered":"Chocolate Orange Yule Log with Leftover Christmas Pudding\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span>It\u2019s pretty much mandatory to have a Christmas pudding on December 25th, but in our house, very few people end up eating it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This quirky twist on classic chocolate yule log helps use up any Christmas pud scraps. The trick is in the chocolate. I use Terry\u2019s chocolate orange to whip up a luxurious buttercream, but you do you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ingredients (Serves 8-10)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>3 Eggs (separated into yolks and whites)<\/li>\n<li>75g Caster Sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder<\/li>\n<li>50g Plain Flour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Filling<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>150ml Brandy Cream (or double cream)<\/li>\n<li>30g Icing Sugar<\/li>\n<li>200g Xmas Pudding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Topping<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>150g Unsalted Butter (softened)<\/li>\n<li>150g Icing Sugar<\/li>\n<li>75g Dark Chocolate Terry\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>75g Milk Chocolate Terry\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>Extra icing sugar to garnish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Method (Takes 1 hour)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat the oven to 200\u00b0C\/ 180\u00b0C (fan)\/ 400\u00b0F\/ Gas 6<\/li>\n<li>Line a 9 x 13inch baking tray with non-stick baking parchment<\/li>\n<li>Add the egg whites to a stand mixer and beat until stiff peaks form, then turn off and keep to one side<\/li>\n<li>Add the egg yolks to a separate large bowl with the caster sugar and mix well with a wooden spoon or until combined<\/li>\n<li>Sift the cocoa powder into the egg yolks and mix together again<\/li>\n<li>Using a large metal spoon, carefully fold the egg whites through the egg yolk mixture (make sure you don\u2019t knock out too much air!) until well combined<\/li>\n<li>Sift over the plain flour and fold through carefully<\/li>\n<li>Spread the cake mix evenly into the baking tray, then put into the oven. Bake for 10-11 min or until the cake is cooked through<\/li>\n<li>Once cooked, remove the tray from the oven and keep aside for 2 min<\/li>\n<li>Place a clean tea towel over the baking tray, then flip the cake over. Whilst the cake is still hot, use the tea towel to help you roll the cake lengthways into a tight log shape. Leave aside like this until completely cool<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, whip the brandy cream in a stand mixer with the icing sugar until soft peaks form then remove to another bowl (don\u2019t bother washing the stand mixer bowl!)<\/li>\n<li>Put the Terry\u2019s chocolate segments into a small heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water &#8211; make sure the bowl isn\u2019t touching the water! Stir until melted then remove the bowl from the pan and let cool slightly<\/li>\n<li>Into the same stand mixer, add the softened unsalted butter with the icing sugar. Stir with a spoon, then beat until combined<\/li>\n<li>Slowly pour in the melted chocolate and beat until mixed. This is your chocolate buttercream<\/li>\n<li>Once the cake has cooled, carefully unroll and remove the tea towel<\/li>\n<li>Spread the whipped brandy cream over the cake, then crumble over the leftover Christmas pudding. Re-roll the yule log lengthways, pushing in any filling that falls out, until the seam is underneath the log<\/li>\n<li>Spread the buttercream all over the cake and use a small knife to make lines to resemble a tree log. Trim the ends to neaten then put in the fridge for at least 30 min to set<\/li>\n<li>Dust with some sifted icing sugar, if liked, and serve to your guests!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is Gousto?<\/h2>\n<p>Dinner, but not as you know it.
