What\u2019s the perfect oven temperature? How often should you baste the bird? And how long should you rest it once it\u2019s cooked? This year, to dodge any last-minute Christmas eve squabbles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/author\/lucinda\">Lucinda\u2019s<\/a> graced me (and you) with her tastiest turkey techniques. \u2018Tis the season to be jolly, after all!<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to calculate turkey cooking times: <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Working out how long to cook a turkey all depends on the weight of your bird (that\u2019s <i>after<\/i> stuffing it).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>If your turkey weighs more than 4kg (around 9lb)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Calculate 20 minutes per kg, plus 90 minutes to finish.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>If your turkey weighs less than 4kg<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Calculate 20 minutes per kg, plus 70 minutes to finish.<\/p>\n<p>To help you on your way, here\u2019s what might just be the\u00a0most foolproof\u00a0turkey recipe ever. It\u2019s nice and simple, and the results are great.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Ingredients<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>5-6kg turkey, thawed (if frozen) and giblets removed<\/li>\n<li>75g butter<\/li>\n<li>Salt and pepper<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/festive-stuffing-recipe\">Chestnut, cranberry and pine nut stuffing<\/a>\u00a0(optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Method <\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Preheat <\/b>the oven to 190\u00b0C\/170\u00b0C fan\/gas 4<\/li>\n<li><b>Place <\/b>the turkey in a roasting tin (or dish), remove the string from the legs and open them out. If you\u2019re making any, this is where you\u2019ll add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gousto.co.uk\/blog\/festive-stuffing-recipe\">the stuffing<\/a> to the cavity.<\/li>\n<li><b> Dot<\/b> the softened butter over the turkey. Season with as much salt and freshly ground pepper as you like.<\/li>\n<li><b> Cover <\/b>the bird (loosely) with a sheet or foil and seal is around the sides of the tin (this will help to keep the turkey moist).<\/li>\n<li><b> Calculate <\/b>the cooking time (see the \u2018How to calculate cooking time for a turkey\u2019 section above).<\/li>\n<li><b> Baste <\/b>the turkey with the buttery juices every hour or so using a baster (or a spoon) to keep it from drying out.<\/li>\n<li><b> Remove <\/b>the foil for the final half hour of cooking time (don\u2019t bin it \u2013 you\u2019ll need it again later).<\/li>\n<li><b> Test <\/b>to see if the juices run clear by inserting a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. If they\u2019re still running pink then pop the turkey back in the oven for another 15-20 minutes and check again.<\/li>\n<li><b> Take out <\/b>of the oven and pop the foil back on.<\/li>\n<li><b>Rest <\/b>for at least half an hour (or an hour if you can) to allow the meat to relax and tenderise.<\/li>\n<li><b>Carve <\/b>and serve \u2013 your Christmas (or Thanksgiving) lunch is ready!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Top tips for a textbook turkey<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Your turkey is done when the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s not quite ready yet, pop it back in for another 15-20 minutes before checking again.<\/li>\n<li>Leave it to rest for at least 30 minutes (an hour if you can!) before carving \u2013 this allows the meat to relax, making it easier to slice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is Gousto?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Dinner, but not as you know it.
