Detox is probably a word you hear a lot, especially, throughout January, but don’t really have the first idea what it means. Well, fear not dear reader, Gousto is here to fill you in on the ins and outs of detoxing, what it means, how it helps and what to eat. So, put down that fizzy drink, stop enjoying those artificial sweeteners and swot up on detoxing!
What is detoxing?
First things first, what exactly is detoxing? Detoxing is something the human body does naturally in order to get rid of unwanted toxins or materials, so it is all about giving your body a bit of help. If you are filling yourself full of toxins your body won’t be able to detox quick enough to help flush them out. It’s about supporting your body’s detoxification process rather than abusing it.
Your liver is the main man; it’s the Messi of the detoxing world. What your liver does is it neutralizes these bad toxins and bacteria, allowing your kidneys to flush them out. By detoxing you will be giving your liver a far lighter workload to deal with.
What effect does detoxing have?
Once you start detoxing you will see a big difference in your health and lifestyle. While it is all about flushing your toxins, detoxing will help you lose weight, boost your energy levels, improve your sleep and vastly improve your digestion. Forget about Red Bull, detoxing will have you doing cartwheels and backflips but sadly won’t give you wings, it will fill you full of energy you never knew you had. Not only this, it will help you be more awake, mentally focused and less bloated. There really isn’t a down side to detoxing.
How do I start detoxing?
How do I to start detoxing is a very good question. First up, you have to eliminate things like alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, saturated fats and refined sugars. You are saying goodbye to these because they act as toxins in your body and get in the way of your healing process. But it is not only food that contributes to your toxin build up, believe it or not, stressing creates a massive amount of toxins. To counter the inevitable issue of stress, take part in a yoga class or meditation and by meditation I don’t always mean crossing your legs and humming but instead you could listen to music, draw or do some house chores. Find something that suits you, helps your mind and stick to it.
