My Top 3 Healthy Carbs

Carbohydrates are often avoided at all costs by dieters. It’s the main reason that being on a diet can be so darn miserable! Glucose is our main source of energy so cut out your main source of glucose, and it’s no surprise you feel rotten.

Not all carbs are created equal. I want to introduce you to three super healthy ways to get your fix, without feeling that guilt that often comes as an unwanted side dish with big bowls of pasta and piles of toast.



Feta Baked Millet

Our Feta Baked Millet it topped with rainbow veg for a true taste explosion. When we test cooked this at Gousto HQ, the office went wild for it. Millet has received some bad press but, as with most food, is all good if consumed in moderation. Its delicate nutty flavour and mood-boosting properties make it a great carb source, and it’s gluten-free! Millet is used in porridge across Russia and China, and hails from Africa. Intrigued? Chipotle Quinoa Chilli and Lime Sour Cream

Closely related to tumble weed (fact of the day), quinoa has exploded on to the health scene for good reason: it is a complete protein, which very few plant-based foods can boast. It contains a ton of other nutrients and minerals too, including iron, B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, vitamin E and fibre. Our Chipotle Quinoa Chilli is all the more satisfying for this magic carb, which transforms the spicy sauce into extra thick, protein-packed goodness. Here, the quinoa is cooked with cumin, chipotle and cinnamon for a delicately smoky spiciness.



Jewelled Chicken Freekah

Freekeh is wheat that’s harvested while young and green and then roasted over an open fire so that the straw and chaff are burned off, leaving nothing but this budding little grain, too young and moist to burn. Firm and chewy, it’s perfect in our Middle Eastern-inspired Jewelled Chicken dish. Cranberries, salted almonds, fresh mint and tangy feta… the perfect warmer as chilly Autumn sets in. Tumble it onto a large plate and get everyone to help themselves. Serving for serving, freekeh has more protein and twice as much fibre as quinoa.
